River of Song
by William S. Monroe
(from Psalm 46)
[Chorus:]
C F C F/C
There is a river, a river of song.
D G
And it’s flowed from the people for ages along
C F C F/C
And there’s little on earth that can make us so strong
G C F/C
As a drink from that river -- that river of song.
C F C F/C
The Songs of our mothers and fathers now gone
D G
They’ve weathered the seasons, and still they live on
C F C F/C
Songs of our labors our joys and our pain
G C F/C
They renew and refresh us, like a cool summer rain.
[Chorus:]
C F C F/C
These songs tell the story of the struggle for right.
D G
They give us the courage to keep up the fight.
C F C F/C
Gather the nations. A new day shall dawn
G C F/C
There’s freedom and justice in that river of song.
[Chorus:]
C F C F/C
Though we have sorrow from life’s wicked blows,
D G
The storms and the trials of life here below.
C F C F/C
We’ll rise above them, and we’ll carry on,
G C F/C
With the help of that river that river of song.
[Chorus:]
